Along with the evolution of the world and society, Azkoitia has also undergone profound transformations in all areas. A photograph published in this month's Zaharrak Berri section highlights this change in the town, revealing the situation of the Altzibar neighborhood in the 1950s.
The homes at number 10 of Altzibar Avenue were built in 1958. This construction is linked to the arrival in 1952 of the Forjas de Zubillaga company from Oñati (Gipuzkoa), which adopted the name Acerías y Forjas de Azcoitia upon its arrival in the municipality. Specifically, these residences located in Altzibar square were built for the senior executives of that factory. In addition, a commissary was set up in Santa Klara.
In the photograph, in front of the building under construction, residents can be seen working, caring for children, or strolling. Next to the building, there was once a passage that led up to the Urrategi neighborhood, and next to it, the factory of the Izarraitz industrial construction cooperative. Today, the road to the Urrategi neighborhood no longer passes through that passage, and the Urrategi Ama Plaza and residential buildings have been constructed in the place of the Izarraitz factory.
The photograph is by photographer Josu Arroitajauregi, and was received by Azkoitia Guka through collaborator Kepa Alberdi. Azkoitia Guka encourages citizens to share their old and significant photographs stored at home, either by email or by delivering them in person.
