Located at Nueva Dentro 21-23, the building will feature an integral wooden structure, with the Ensanche 21 Zabalgunea society leading the project. This initiative aligns with environmental criteria such as carbon footprint reduction, energy efficiency, and the use of renewable materials.
The future property will mark a step forward in sustainable urban planning and the recovery of traditional construction techniques in the center of Vitoria-Gasteiz. It will utilize a laminated fir (CLT) wood structure for both vertical and horizontal panels. This wood offers similar resistance to concrete but is lighter and easier to transport, while also meeting fire safety requirements of the technical building code.
The project will provide eight rental homes for young people, aiming to contribute to the rejuvenation, dynamism, and social revitalization of the Historic Quarter. The building's design will be contemporary, incorporating natural insulation and energy efficiency systems, following the sustainable rehabilitation trend recently applied in the city.
The building stands out for combining advanced design with construction solutions that use wood as the primary element. The medieval quarter of Vitoria-Gasteiz has maintained a tradition of wooden frameworks in its homes since the 17th and 18th centuries.
The reclaimed plot had been unused for decades. Now, Ensanche 21 Zabalgunea is constructing housing for the first time in this unique setting of the Medieval Quarter.
“"This project unites tradition and modernity in Vitoria-Gasteiz's architecture, making a clear commitment to sustainability and innovation."
