Zabiullah Haidary, an Afghan doctor who fled Kabul, has settled with his family in Zarautz to escape Taliban reprisals and now works at Policlínica Gipuzkoa, coordinating the homologation of other Afghan professionals.

Zabiullah Haidary, a resident of Zarautz, hastily left Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, in September 2021. He fled with his wife and sister-in-law to avoid Taliban reprisals, leaving behind their lives as an internist and gynecologists. They escaped with only what they could carry, with little to nothing, and without a clear idea of their destination.
The decision to leave was primarily driven by the untenable situation regarding women's rights. They did not want to live in a country where daughters or students could no longer exercise their basic right: to attend school and study. They escaped through the Pakistani border and arrived in Madrid, where they stayed for a month, until they were assigned to Donosti and, after a few days in the capital, to Zarautz, where they have resided for four years.
Zabiullah, 36 years old, works as an emergency doctor at Policlínica Gipuzkoa, while his wife and sister-in-law are gynecologists working at Clínica Zuatzu. Furthermore, they are the first Afghan doctors in Spain, and Zabi is responsible for coordinating the homologation applications of about a hundred Afghan professionals who, like him, are striving to establish themselves outside their home country.

"We are very grateful for the welcome Zarautz has given us."
