As in previous years, the Itzurun-Arranpla open water swim will feature its main 3,000-meter race, and children will have the option to choose between 500 or 1,100-meter distances. However, this year's edition brings a significant novelty: a mid-distance race of 1,500 meters for adults will be held for the first time.
The organizers decided to offer the 1,500-meter option to make the event "more popular," acknowledging that the 3,000-meter course, which connects Itzurun beach and the Arbustain ramp, might be too challenging for many. Swimmers opting for the mid-distance race will start from Santiago beach, swim a few meters out to sea, and then turn back to finish the course up the river at the ramp. Additionally, they will benefit from the rising tide and the protection of the paole dike, unlike the long-distance race held in open sea.
“"We thought that offering a mid-distance option would encourage more people to participate. The 3,000-meter race attracts people who swim quite a bit, and we believe the 1,500-meter race can be more popular. There are many people in Zumaia who swim in the pool, and those who swim a little will easily complete this race."
According to the club's board member, the Itzurun-Arranpla swim provides a much-needed boost to swimming and the Taosa club in Zumaia. Therefore, they have encouraged residents to participate in the race on July 11. Registration is already open on the rockthesport.com website. Children will pay 15 euros, adults choosing the mid-distance race 20 euros, and swimmers in the main race 30 euros.
