Donostia-born linguist Mikel Zalbide has turned 75 and has been named an emeritus academician by Euskaltzaindia, in accordance with the institution's internal rules.

Following Euskaltzaindia's regulations, Zalbide has become an emeritus academician upon reaching the age of 75. Consequently, the institution has opened a process to elect a successor, with proposals to fill Zalbide's vacancy to be presented at the next two plenary sessions.
Specifically, Euskaltzaindia has announced that full academicians can submit their proposals to fill Mikel Zalbide's position during the plenary sessions in June and July. The selection will then take place in the third session, scheduled for September in Pamplona. A proposal for full academician status requires the endorsement of three current full academicians and must detail the candidate's merits.
Mikel Zalbide was born in San Sebastián on May 9, 1951. He pursued Higher Industrial Engineering at the University of Navarra and obtained Euskaltzaindia's 'D' teacher's title in 1972. He has had a long and impactful career in the field of the Basque language, including participation in the joint commission between the Basque Government's General Council and the University of Bilbao for university language normalization.
He was also a founding member of the Elhuyar Cultural Group and the magazine Elhuyar in 1974, and an organizer of the Udako Euskal Unibertsitatea (Summer Basque University) for several years. He was responsible for lexicography in science and technology at UZEI from 1978 to 1981 and has served multiple terms on the Basque Government's Advisory Council for the Basque Language.
He worked in the Department of Education, Universities, and Research of the Basque Government from 1981 to 2014 as the head of the Basque Language Service until his retirement. Within Euskaltzaindia, he was appointed a corresponding academician in 1983 and a full academician in 2006. He has focused particularly on lexicography and the Jagon Department, and in recent years, has served as an advisor and director for the Social History of the Basque Language project.
