Leioa celebrated its 500th anniversary yesterday afternoon with an event at Palacio Artaza, honoring the associations that have shaped the municipality and presenting the 2026 Leioa Day Award to the organization GAUDE.

The municipality marked this historic milestone with the attendance of over 300 people, including institutional representatives and figures from the associative, educational, and business sectors. The event highlighted the generational contribution of associations to Leioa's identity and community life.
This year's 2026 Leioa Day Award was presented to GAUDE, a non-profit organization supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families. Through this award, the City Council aimed to acknowledge the association's trajectory, its involvement in municipal life, and its contribution to building a more inclusive society.
Representatives from several long-standing associations in the municipality also spoke, including Txikiak Dantza Taldea, Andrak, AEK, Comercios Unidos, Fath Pro Sahara, Errekalde Errota, SD Leioa, Mugi, Lamiakoko Jai Batzordea, Mercedarias, and the San Bartolome neighborhood association. On behalf of the entire associative network, they recognized the contributions of individuals who have kept collective initiatives alive and helped shape Leioa into the community it is today.
The event was attended by the Mayor of Leioa, Iban Rodriguez Etxebarria; the Minister of Science, Universities, and Innovation of the Basque Government, Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias, and members of the Municipal Corporation. The evening was accompanied by live music from Travellin’ Brothers and David Medina.
