Leioa marked the culmination of its 500th-anniversary celebrations this weekend with events rich in emotion and symbolism. The initiative "Leioa has a Treasure" once again brought together Leioa families to safeguard their memories and messages, intended to be recovered in 25 years.
The municipality experienced a festive and participatory day that brought the spirit of this commemoration to the streets: the history of the municipality, recognition of those who are part of it, and a legacy for future generations.
During the morning, a new phase of "Leioa has a Treasure" took place, inviting families to store objects, memories, and messages representing contemporary Leioa in their tupperware containers. Additionally, residents could leave voice messages via a participatory radio, with recordings to be preserved alongside other mementos for discovery in 25 years.
In the afternoon, Errekalde square hosted "Leioa Invisible," a spectacle of music, dance, and community participation featuring Leioa Kantika Korala, Andoni Aresti Landa Dantza Eskola, La Fabrika, and various local associations, among other participants.
One of the most symbolic moments of the day was the burial of the final tupperware containers and the sealing of the time capsule. This collective act involved individuals representing the diverse generations, experiences, and perspectives that form Leioa, aiming to leave a testament of this historic moment for those who will live in the municipality in 25 years.
The celebration continued with a popular hot chocolate and musical entertainment on the Bidebarri Boulevard, before a traditional Basque dance gathering (romería) in Ikea Barri square.
With this event, Leioa concluded two days of celebrations that began on Friday with the observance of Leioa Day at Artatza Palace. These festivities have highlighted the municipality's 500 years of history and, particularly, the people, families, associations, and collectives who have contributed to its development.
