Tourist Train Driver Arrested in Sopela for Driving Under the Influence of Drugs

A 45-year-old tourist train driver was arrested by the Ertzaintza in Sopela for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs with 35 children on board.

A 45-year-old tourist train driver was arrested by the Ertzaintza in Sopela on Thursday, accused of driving under the influence of drugs with 35 children and their teachers on board, as reported by the Security Department of the Basque Government.

The incident occurred shortly before 10:00 AM on Thursday. The Ertzaintza was informed that the driver appeared to be operating the vehicle under the influence of narcotics. Officers arrived at the scene and, observing the man's agitated demeanor, administered a drug test, which yielded a positive result.
The driver was found to be carrying a small bag containing white powder and nine pills, presumed to be narcotics. Consequently, he was arrested for an alleged crime against road safety and faces an administrative sanction for violating the Citizen Security Protection Law due to drug possession.

Following the arrest, the individual was taken to the Getxo police station for further proceedings. Upon completion, he will be brought before a judge. The tourist train was immobilized at the scene, and the children were transported by bus to their school.
