The unions assert that this incident is not an isolated event, but rather a direct consequence of a collapsed security model and political management that, in their view, has failed to guarantee the most basic protection for citizens. They emphasized that «a red line has been crossed».
On the night of the highest public attendance, during the San Jorge festivities, police presence was «clearly insufficient», lacking real capacity for prevention or control at key access points. The unions report that on some days, only one patrol car is responsible for the security of the entire municipality, and minimum services are not being met without measures being taken by the council.
“"This is not an isolated incident, but the direct consequence of a collapsed security model and political management that, in our opinion, has ceased to guarantee the most basic protection for citizens."
For its part, the Esan union shares the criticism, indicating that, according to data provided by the officers themselves, only three patrols covered the entire night when the assault took place. This led to «extreme situations» where only one patrol remained in the festive area, while the rest attended to incidents in other parts of the town.
They have proposed clear preventive measures such as controls at access points, deterrent presence, or specific deployments in critical areas like metro stations. However, they lament that personnel are needed for this, and they were not available.
Furthermore, ErNE believes that the Council «avoids applying level 16 of the destination supplement to avoid paying retroactivity since December 2023». They describe this decision as «economic at the expense of the workforce» and detrimental to the citizenry. They also criticize the productivity bonus «of barely 18 euros per month for night shifts and holidays, which disappears during vacations or sick leave».
