Municipal technicians, members of senior associations, and social and community stakeholders gathered in Getxo to begin defining priorities and new action lines for the coming years. Participants worked in thematic tables focusing on transport, housing, public spaces, social and health services, inclusion, intergenerational relations, sports, and culture.
Carmen Díaz, the Councillor for Social Cohesion, emphasized that the project must be grounded in citizen input and daily experiences. The goal is to enhance infrastructures, coexistence, social cohesion, and intergenerational justice, organizing spaces, services, and relationships to make Getxo "a better municipality to live in for people of all ages".
This initiative, inspired by the World Health Organization's (WHO) Age-Friendly Cities and Communities framework, began nearly a decade ago. The City Council acknowledges societal changes, stating that "building a friendlier Getxo is a task for the entire municipality." Addressing aging from a shared, community-based perspective is deemed essential.
