The works, which had a municipal budget of 1,461,568.80 euros (VAT included), were carried out in an area of 38,517.62 square meters located next to the Museum of Fine Arts. The intervention covered two distinct areas: the eastern sector of Doña Casilda Park, from Gran Vía to Euskadi Square and Teófilo Guiard Street; and Euskadi Square itself, from the sidewalk of Alameda Mazarredo to the museum front and the Deusto Bridge.
The Council's approach aimed to beautify the accesses to the Bilbao art gallery, facilitate pedestrian traffic between the city's two major museums, and promote the use and enjoyment of the square itself. In this regard, the opening of a new path from Alameda Mazarredo reinforces a more direct and natural access to this space.
The intervention has focused on improving the urban quality of a highly transited area, acting on routes, accesses, and elements that had deteriorated over time. The result is a more ordered and continuous space. One of the most visible changes is in front of the museum, where a single platform has been created on the road, reducing vehicular traffic and prioritizing pedestrians. This is complemented by the widening of the sidewalk at the entrance to the Museum of Fine Arts and the creation of new routes that allow a more direct connection with the Guggenheim.
Accessibility has also been a key focus of the project. Routes have been adapted to eliminate barriers and facilitate transit for people with reduced mobility, both in the square and in the park, where paths have also been reorganized. In the vicinity of Doña Casilda Park, the intervention had a more landscape-oriented character, renewing the image of the museum access through the repair and replacement of elements, the rehabilitation of spaces, and a redesign of the flowerbeds.
This action coincides with the expansion process of the Museum of Fine Arts, reinforcing the role of this enclave as a strategic cultural hub. Without radically altering its physiognomy, Euskadi Square and its surroundings gain in continuity and urban quality, opening a new and exciting chapter for one of the key spaces in contemporary Bilbao.
