The Basque Government has strongly condemned the serious acts of violence registered yesterday in Bilbao, which included damage and looting of shops, burning of vehicles and urban furniture, assaults on people in the street, and attacks against agents of the Ertzaintza and the Municipal Police. The spokesperson Maria Ubarretxena read an institutional declaration at the press conference following the Governing Council meeting, expressing the Executive's solidarity with the affected residents, shopkeepers, and professionals, and emphasizing that no cause justifies violence.
The Basque Government supports the work of the Ertzaintza and insists that the events must be fully investigated so that those responsible face justice. It also warns of the seriousness of young people's involvement in dynamics of hatred and intimidation, and calls on political forces, social agents, and the entire Basque society to reject violence and protect democratic coexistence.
Furthermore, the Governing Council has approved the General Budgets Project for Euskadi for 2027, amounting to 17,629 million euros (+7.6% compared to 2026). The main objective is to strengthen public services, address citizens' main concerns, and prepare Euskadi for the economic, social, and demographic challenges of the coming years. Health and Education remain the main pillars, jointly concentrating 56% of the budgetary resources.
Public investment will increase by 7.9% to 1,865 million euros, with R&D+i investment reaching 772 million. The Eguzki Hotz initiative will allocate 120 million euros to sustainable air conditioning, and 1.8 million euros will be dedicated to training researchers and technologists in the agri-food and fishing sector.
The Minister of Finance and Public Funds, Noël d’Anjou, highlighted that the 2027 Budget Project "reflects a commitment to a more cohesive, innovative, secure Euskadi, prepared to face the challenges of the next decade."
Finally, the Governing Council has approved a direct subsidy of 62,865 euros to the Spanish Red Cross to strengthen social care and support for people affected by the housing situation in the Agarre neighborhood, in Lemoa.
