The Lazkaomendi Junior Cycling Race is set to mark half a century of existence this year, celebrating its 50th edition. This competition, exclusively for male junior cyclists, will take place on May 2nd. Organizers aim to add a special touch to this commemoration, even though the official 50th anniversary will be observed next year.
The race will commence in Lazkao square at 10:00 AM and, after covering a 92.5-kilometer route, will conclude in Lazkaomendi, specifically in Itxurren, around 12:15 PM. Cyclists will face several mountain passes, including Abaltzisketa-Gaintza and Urkillaga, the latter located 13 kilometers from the finish line. This year, the ascent to Lazkaomendi will be approached from the Lazkao side.
At the conclusion of the event, in addition to the traditional awards ceremony, a special tribute will be paid to the cyclists who have won this race throughout its 50 editions. The inaugural edition was held in 1977, and the race has been an annual fixture ever since. The list of past winners includes notable names such as Fede Etxabe, Julian Gorospe, Jokin Mujika, Markel Irizar, Mikel Landa, Garikoitz Bravo, Fernando Barcelo, Xabier Mikel and Enekoitz Azparren or Oier Lazkano.
To keep the passion for cycling alive, the Lazkao Race for Elite and Under-23 amateur cyclists, organized by the Lazkao Cycling Association, will also be held during the festivities. This race, now in its 83rd edition, is scheduled for April 25th, starting at 09:30 AM and finishing around 12:45 PM after a 132-kilometer course. The association has extended its gratitude to the organizers and sponsors for their dedicated work.
