Jose Luis Zubizarreta 'Xubi', sporting director of Gipuzkoa Basket, will be stepping down from his position to retire. He announced his decision this Friday to the media during an event to assess the season. "It is time for me to retire, it is for no other reason," stated Zubizarreta.

The Azpeitia native joined the Gipuzkoa Basket project in the summer of 2023, after leaving his responsibilities at ISB Azkoitia-Azpeitia, and has completed three seasons with the Gipuzkoa-based team. Furthermore, due to an agreement between Gipuzkoa Basket and the basketball club Askatuak, the San Sebastián club will be renamed Askatuak Gipuzkoa starting next season. Xubi explained that this change will involve "a restructuring" in certain areas of the club.

Currently, the club has a sports commission responsible for the sporting area. Moving forward, Zubizarreta will serve as an advisor to this commission. "I will advise the team of staff and coaches in building the team, and at the same time, I will be responsible for communication between the club's management and the sporting area, acting as an intermediary," he detailed at the press conference.
