The cultural agenda in Deba for the month of July features a highlight with the Marea Gora cycle of talks. Ikasten, the Deba City Council, and Debako Kultur Elkartea have joined forces to make the coastal town a space for knowledge on diverse topics, presented by specialists.
This year is no exception, and an ambitious agenda has been prepared that will address themes such as witchcraft, the new world order, shipbuilding, and marine pollution.
All talks will take place at the Debako Kultur Elkartea premises on Wednesdays, starting at 19:00. Previous editions have seen a large public turnout, and to ensure accessibility, screens will be set up outdoors in case the venue's capacity is reached.
“"Brujas y brujerías, todo mentira"
The cycle will kick off on July 3rd with a session featuring the renowned writer Toti Martínez de Lezea. Her presentation will focus on the world of witches, titled 'Brujas y brujerías, todo mentira' (Witches and witchcraft, all lies).
“"El nuevo orden mundial y los derechos humanos: entre el caos y la resistencia"
A week later, on July 8th, Juan José Hernández Zubizarreta will deliver a lecture titled 'El nuevo orden mundial y los derechos humanos: entre el caos y la resistencia' (The new world order and human rights: between chaos and resistance). As a Doctor of Law and professor at the University of the Basque Country, he will explore the current global landscape and societal changes.
The Marea Gora program includes two more talks linked to Deba's maritime tradition. On July 15th, Xabier Alberdi Lonbide from Zarautz will give a conference in Basque titled 'Euskal itsasogintza eta itsas historia XVI. eta XVII. mendeetan' (Basque seafaring and maritime history in the 16th and 17th centuries). Alberdi, a History graduate from the University of Deusto, is the director of the Research Section at the Albaola association and scientific director of the Untzi Museoa-Museo Naval de San Sebastián.
“"Lo que el mar esconde y nos devuelve: microplásticos y basuras marinas en nuestros ríos y playas"
The cycle will conclude on July 22nd with a talk by Oihane Cabeza Basurko, a senior researcher at AZTI, who will focus on the impact of pollution on the seas. The session will be held under the clear title 'Lo que el mar esconde y nos devuelve: microplásticos y basuras marinas en nuestros ríos y playas' (What the sea hides and returns to us: microplastics and marine litter in our rivers and beaches).
