The main roads in Álava, including the AP-68, AP-1, and A-1, accounted for the majority of penalties in 2025, with 70% of the 64,000 fines processed by the Ertzaintza being related to excessive speed.

According to data released by the Department of Security of the Basque Government, Álava's roads registered an average of 175 daily complaints during 2025. The AP-68 accumulated 22% of the total annual sanctions, while the AP-1 accounted for another 15%. In addition to these two motorways, the A-1, the main east-west road axis in Álava, recorded an additional 17% of the infractions.
Behind this high volume of penalties, one cause is clearly predominant: excessive speed. Seven out of ten fines imposed by the Ertzaintza on Álava's roads in 2025 were directly related to non-compliance with speed limits. Furthermore, other infractions were recorded, linked to vehicle technical conditions, lack of insurance, failure to identify the driver, and various improper behaviors by both drivers and passengers.
Although most complaints are concentrated on the major roads crossing the territory, the secondary road network also shows significant figures. Among the points with the most sanctions, the Barazar mountain pass road stands out, having accumulated over 8,000 complaints in a single year, representing 13% of the total recorded in Álava. Following this is the road connecting Vitoria-Gasteiz with Altube, which exceeds 3,000 annual penalties.
