The Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council will reinforce LED lighting in three areas of the city, aiming to improve safety in dark zones identified as insecure by women and elderly individuals.
In the coming months, three areas of Vitoria-Gasteiz will receive additional LED lighting. These are dark zones, routes that both women and elderly people identify as unsafe.
Therefore, the Vitoria City Council intends to renew and expand public lighting with a gender perspective. The measure will affect the following routes:
- The interior parking lot of the Aldabe civic center (16 new lights).
- The bike path on Zurrupitieta street (21 luminaires).
- The pedestrian path connecting Zuazo with Zabalgana (20 lights).
The contract has been awarded to the company Montajes Eléctricos Elca S.A. for an amount of 126,879.66 euros, representing a 15.41% reduction from the bidding budget, with a nine-month execution period.
This action will strengthen lighting on these common routes, eliminating shadow areas and improving visibility in environments that had been highlighted by citizens. In total, new LED luminaires adapted to each space will be installed, with special attention to pedestrian and cyclist routes.

"We are moving from planning to action in three points where we knew intervention was necessary. These are highly used spaces where improving lighting has a direct impact on the safety and peace of mind with which people move."
Over the past four years, the City Council has invested more than half a million euros in improving public lighting with a gender perspective. Notable examples include the Olarizu Botanical Garden, Abetxuko, Gamarra Mayor, and Valentín de Foronda street. These renovations have allowed for the reduction of shadow areas, modernization of old installations, and reinforcement of the sense of security on pedestrian and cyclist routes.

"Lighting is not just a technical matter; it is also a safety tool. Illumination directly influences how we use the city and the peace of mind with which we move."
