The avant-garde cycle of the Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival, known as Jazz en el Europa, has finalized its program. For the second consecutive year, the event will take place at the María de Maeztu Auditorium within the Europa Congress Palace, due to ongoing renovation work at the Teatro Principal. The performances are scheduled from July 13 to 18, showcasing a curated selection of new trends and contemporary jazz sounds.
The program will kick off on July 13 with the trio of young and acclaimed Brazilian pianist Amaro Freitas. Freitas, who has a flourishing international career, is recognized for his jazz innovation and will be joined by bassist Sidiel Vieira and drummer Rodrigo Digão Braz, blending Afro-Brazilian rhythms and improvisation.
On Tuesday, July 14, it will be the turn of another trio, the American group New Jazz Underground. This collective, comprising saxophonist Abdias Armenteros, bassist Sebastian Rios, and drummer TJ Reddick, is considered highly creative and is poised to become a significant reference beyond traditional jazz.
Regarding local talent, on Wednesday, July 15, Álava-born bassist Iosu Izaguirre will present his second album, Ilusio. Following his tribute to Charles Mingus, Izaguirre offers an open and emotional perspective on jazz in this work, accompanied by his sextet featuring Rubén Salvador (trumpet), Pablo Ramos (alto saxophone), Asier Iturbe (trombone), Koldo Uriarte (piano), and Aitor Bravo (drums).
On Thursday, July 16, Canadian pianist Kris Davis will also present her new album, Run the Gauntlet. Davis skillfully blends structured compositions with spontaneous improvisation, and her performance will pay tribute to six pioneering female pianists who have influenced her career, such as Geri Allen and Carla Bley.
The cycle will continue on Friday, July 17 with Riley Mulherkar and will conclude on Saturday, July 18 with the prodigious Chicago multi-instrumentalist Isaiah Collier, who will arrive in Vitoria-Gasteiz with his tour Collier plays Coltrane, a tribute to John Coltrane on the centenary of his birth. Collier will revisit themes from his 2021 album Cosmic Transitions.
Tickets and passes for the concerts of this 49th edition of Jazz en el Europa will be available for purchase starting tomorrow, Friday, on www.jazzvitoria.com. Individual tickets are priced at 20 euros, while a pass for all six concerts costs 85 euros.
