The Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council has renamed two streets in the San Martín neighborhood today, aiming to remove designations linked to the Franco dictatorship.

The street named Pintor Sáenz de Tejada will now be called Paz Díaz de Espada, in honor of the painter. The street named Pintor Vicente Abreu will be renamed Frida Kahlo, celebrating the Mexican feminist artist. Both streets are located in the same neighborhood.
These changes, carried out this morning, align with the announcement made in early July by Mayor Maider Etxebarria to continue removing street names "linked to the Franco dictatorship".
The modifications have received approval from experts consulted by the Mayor's Department. Etxebarria stated, "This city must rely on democratic memory to move forward and, at the same time, incorporate more women's names into the street directory."
In line with this initiative, the City Council also plans to replace the name of Juan de la Cierva street, located in the Miñano technology park, with that of biochemist Margarita Salas.
