The Local Government Board has approved the tender for renovation works at Arantzabela plaza, located in the Arana neighborhood, with a budget of €431,949 and a six-month execution period.
The plaza is situated at a lower level than the surrounding streets, within a residential block. While it remains a frequently used space by residents, the passage of time has led to the deterioration of some of its elements. This intervention also responds to neighborhood requests to improve the children's play area and its surroundings.
A key part of the work will be the renovation of the playground, which currently appears aged and is located between a roadway and a retaining wall. The project aims to enhance the conditions of this area, particularly for the children who use it.
Another significant action will address the existing retaining wall. Municipal technical services have detected fissures and minor movements that they have been monitoring. The project includes reinforcing its stability by constructing a new landscaped wall to support the current one. This solution will also transform the appearance of this part of the plaza, replacing the current concrete wall with a green surface.
The renovation also includes the installation of a raised corten steel planter along the plaza. This element will help separate the seating and play areas from vehicle traffic, creating a more protected and pleasant environment. Thus, the children's space will be complemented by two green features: the new green wall and the planter, improving the plaza's image and environmental conditions.
Furthermore, the existing bicycle parking will be relocated to widen the sidewalk and improve pedestrian accessibility.
“"With this intervention, we aim to address the needs communicated by the residents and improve a space that is part of the neighborhood's daily life. The priority is to renovate the play area, enhance safety, and create a more comfortable, accessible, and pleasant plaza for everyone who uses it."
This action is part of the planned investments to improve public spaces in the Arana neighborhood. The implementation of the OTA (municipal resident parking regulation) in 2025 has helped reduce the presence of vehicles from non-residents seeking parking in the area, a context in which the Council plans to continue improving the neighborhood's coexistence spaces.
