The Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council has awarded the new urban cleaning and waste collection service contract to Acciona, amounting to 381,838,178.70 euros for a ten-year period. The service is expected to commence in June, bringing substantial changes to the city's cleaning management.
The new contract includes the complete renewal of the vehicle fleet and the replacement of all containers. Additionally, 20 fixed recycling points will be installed, and a daily door-to-door collection service will be implemented for businesses in the city center. Heavy machinery will run on natural gas, and electric vehicles will be incorporated to ensure a more efficient, sustainable, and quieter service.
During the summer, mechanical street washing of sidewalks will be prioritized, and a new service for scrubbing pavements with specialized machines to remove dirt will be introduced. Operational teams will work year-round on leaf removal and vegetation clearing, focusing on leaves in winter and adventitious vegetation from March to October. Annually, intensive cleaning operations will be carried out in neighborhoods, covering roadways, sidewalks, drains, and waste bins.
Regarding waste collection, new galvanized steel containers, 1.5 millimeters thick and with a capacity of 3,000 to 3,200 liters, will be installed. This new material will reduce vandalism and fires, and their weight will prevent them from being displaced by wind. Furthermore, a daily door-to-door collection system will be established for businesses in the city center, Ensanche, and Medieval Quarter.
The Mobile Green Point will also be transformed with the placement of 20 fixed recycling points in various neighborhoods and areas of Vitoria-Gasteiz, where cooking oil, batteries, X-rays, and electronic waste will be collected. The contract also includes improvements for staff and facilities at Aguirrelanda, such as renovating changing rooms and installing photovoltaic panels.
