Tomorrow, September 7th, marks World Duchenne-Becker Muscular Dystrophy Day, and the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council is joining the initiative. To commemorate this, the facade of the Casa Consistorial will be illuminated in red.
The aim of this action is to raise awareness of these two rare and similar genetic diseases, which generally cause muscle weakness. It also seeks to highlight these neuromuscular conditions, promote scientific research, and educate the public about them and their needs.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is characterized by progressive weakness of the pelvic muscles in childhood (from 2 or 3 years of age). It primarily affects males, with an incidence of 1 in 3,500 births. In Becker Muscular Dystrophy, the symptoms are very similar, although less severe and appearing later.
