The Zumaia Town Council approved a motion in its ordinary April plenary session, calling on Euskotren to operate a half-hourly train service between Donostia and Zumaia year-round, including weekends and public holidays.

During its ordinary April plenary session last Thursday, the Zumaia Town Council passed a motion addressed to Euskotren. Through this document, the council has requested that the train service connecting Donostia and Zumaia run every half hour throughout the entire year.
Currently, there are two main frequencies for trains between Zumaia and Donostia. On weekdays, trains operate every 30 minutes in both directions. However, on weekends and public holidays, except during the summer season, services are offered hourly.

"As has been observed since the beginning of April, many trains are overcrowded, with the detrimental consequences this entails."

The motion highlights that in recent years, particularly since early April, many trains have been operating at full capacity. This has led to Osakidetza services having to attend to passengers due to overcrowding on the trains. Furthermore, some users have had to wait for the next train on weekends, as services arriving from Bilbao were insufficient.
With evolving social and tourism models, an increasing number of people are utilizing public transport. Concurrently, the current discounts associated with public transport have also significantly boosted the number of users.
In the opinion of the Zumaia Town Council, the coastal train service would be significantly improved by a change that does not require construction work: urgently implementing the 30-minute weekday frequency on the coastal train line reaching Zumaia in Gipuzkoa, also for Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays throughout the year, both in the morning and in the afternoon.
