Zumaia will honor maritime tradition and fishing this Saturday with the 'Itsasoko Izarra' event, organized by the Beduola association, Astindu, and the City Council.

The historical connection between the Star of the Sea and sailors will be remembered this Saturday in Zumaia at a special event organized by the association Beduola, the dance group Astindu, and the Zumaia City Council. The event, starting at 12:30 PM, aims to revive the celebration of the old Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
The event will depict the landing of boats bringing sardines, which will be unloaded. Subsequently, a sale of the fish will take place in the Fishermen's Guild square. After the fish is landed, there will be a tasting of grilled sardines and txakoli to liven up the afternoon.
Prior to the main event, on Friday, the documentary 'Auzolangintza', created by Iker Iriarte and Pablo Dendaluze, will be screened at the Alondegia's Oxford hall at 8:00 PM. The creators will be present for the introduction.

Sailors risked their lives in storms, and they saw the Virgin as a bright star guiding the ship in the vast ocean.

The image of the Star of the Sea, which Basque fishermen and sailors merged with the figure of Our Lady of Mount Carmel over centuries, remains alive today in coastal towns, invoked to protect sailors and ensure a good annual catch during maritime processions.
