The Zarautz City Council has announced that during the flag-raising ceremony at the upcoming San Pelaio festivities, the organizers of the first tamborrada, celebrating its 25th anniversary, will be honored.

As revealed in the Zarautz municipal plenary session, the flag-raising ceremony marking the start of the San Pelaio festivities will commemorate the promoters of the first tamborrada of gastronomic societies, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. This event aims to highlight their impact on the local festive tradition.
During the tribute, the 'San Pelaio makila' will be presented to the then director of the Zarautz Tourist Office, Ana Mari Esnal, in gratitude for her years of collaboration in organizing the tamborrada and the town's festivals. Additionally, the City Council will recognize the organizers of the first adult tamborrada in 2001, including members from the societies Arkaitz Mendi, Zurbaran, and Urpekoak, as well as a member from the Carballeira society.
Launching the 'chupinazo' (firecracker) at the Zarautz patron saint festivities, on the midnight of June 25th to 26th, is the highest honor the City Council bestows upon local individuals or groups for their trajectory and contribution to the municipality. In recent years, various groups and personalities have been recognized. In 2024, the Zarautz Kirol Elkartea (ZKE) was honored for its 80th anniversary and its work in promoting grassroots sports.
In previous years, Zarautz Abesbatza was recognized in 2023 for its 40th anniversary, and in 2022, healthcare workers were honored for their dedication during the pandemic. Last year, the txistularis Jose Inazio Elias and Joxe Miel Gastañares 'Legazpi' received recognition for their essential role in raising the flag that signals the start of the festivities, although 'Legazpi' passed away last February.
