Xanti Zabaleta has begun his second stint with the Orio women's rowing team and has emphasized the team's extensive renewal. He has found the rowers "enthusiastic and full of hope" in recent months, describing it as a "pleasure" to work with such an "expert team."
The work initiated in November has borne fruit, with the entire team of 19 rowers and two coxswains ready for June. Zabaleta noted that this season they will have seven rowers from the youth system, and all will have opportunities to compete, even if some have fewer chances than others. "Rowing is teamwork, and each rower has a role in the team," he reminded.
During training, the primary objective has been to integrate new rowers with existing ones to foster a stronger locker room atmosphere. From an external perspective, Zabaleta observes that "a good relationship has formed among them," characterized by "solidarity and respect." He also added that they have worked "hard" on technical preparation.
“"Our strength is the cohesion we have achieved within the team."
Winning the Lekeitio Trophy earlier this month has boosted the team's morale. "When you don't get good results, you have to learn to live with that uncertainty," he admitted. He also mentioned that the season with the smaller bateles boats, a preliminary phase to the traineras league, serves as "training" for the season.
Zabaleta's goal for this year is to reach the Euskotren League's top tier. "Setting challenges is positive," he stated, although it remains to be seen if they will be met. He highlighted the team's cohesion as the key factor in overcoming difficult moments.
Regarding direct rivals, Zabaleta believes "all teams" are contenders for Orio this year. He noted that he is currently working with a new team and is not yet certain of its exact standing compared to others.
His favorite regattas are the La Concha Regatta and the Zarautz Regatta. He recalled the latter being the "second Concha" and highly "valued" in his time.
Zabaleta emphasized his responsibility as a coach, contrasting it with his experience as a rower. "You are responsible for the entire team, not just technically; you also need to know how the rowers are doing personally," he explained.
Regarding the new equality plan developed by the Orio City Council and OAE for the club, Zabaleta stated it is a "new system that has been worked on throughout the year" and a "necessary tool" for the club. "We must operate together within a framework of normality," he added.
Zabaleta believes the development of women's rowing has been "significant and positive," observing increased competitiveness and ambition among athletes. "The progress made over many years has enriched women's sports," he underlined.
There is great enthusiasm and eagerness to start the season within the team, although Zabaleta also acknowledged "significant uncertainty." "You can feel the town's support," he said, adding that "support and generosity are always appreciated."
