The rowers of Orio, both men and women, have received a tribute in town for the second consecutive Sunday to celebrate the flags won this weekend. On Saturday, the Lekeitio Trophy was contested, where the Orio teams secured two flags, in both the women's and men's categories. On Sunday afternoon, the Euskadi Traineras Championship took place in Getaria, where the men's team also triumphed, although the women did not qualify.
Yesterday at 8:00 PM, the three flags were waved from the Errusta wall to the town hall, accompanied by the lively tunes of the Orio Brass Band. On the municipal building's balcony, the three flags were raised simultaneously and waved to the applause of the citizens. Everyone was ecstatic, especially the members of the women's team, who waved the trophy won on Saturday shouting 'Aupa Orio!'.
The coaches of the two main traineras teams of the Orio Arraunketa Elkartea were also present at the celebration: Santi Zabaleta (women's) and Iker Zabala (men's). Both expressed satisfaction with their assessment of the weekend.
Santi Zabaleta, the women's team coach, expressed his happiness after winning the Lekeitio Trophy. Although they did not qualify for the Euskadi Championship last week, they were able to 'get rid of the thorn' this weekend. He explained that it is a relatively new team and that in that cohesion work, 'these things happen', adding that 'we are looking for consistency'.
Iker Zabala's team, on the other hand, is more stable, maintaining the core of last year's team, and has won all but one of the races contested. When asked for an assessment, he summarized yesterday with 'perfect so far', although he admitted that 'I always have a concern in mind, because I want the trainera to go even faster, and besides, the season is just beginning'. Their next engagement will be this very weekend, when the Orio men will compete to win the Spanish Traineras Championship.
