The project began three years ago, through a creation grant, and developed by interviewing women connected to the sea. This initial idea, sparked by a family friend's story, led the creator to delve deeper into the lives of coastal women.
The interviewed women emphasized their crucial role in the patriarchal society of the time in raising their families, despite their husbands' absence at sea. They were the foundation of the community. When asked how they experienced solitude, most stated they never felt alone thanks to a strong network of friends and family. From this reflection, comparing it with contemporary loneliness, the play Zanbuila emerged.
“"I believe what's coming is very important: to move away from this solitary society. We have worked hard, and I believe this is in the message of the play, but also integrated into the collective."
The LOLAK Kolektiboa also formed at that moment when the three members came together. When the idea was shared, the other two proposed to carry out the project together, conducting the research and creation process as a team. Despite the challenges faced by small theater collectives, for them, uniting and working collectively has been a “necessity”.
The play's synopsis centers on the existential crisis of a 39-year-old nurse, who, influenced by a woman from another generation she meets through her work and her daughter, reconsiders her life. Based on interviews with coastal women, the play seeks to bring to light the voices and faces of women who are often unseen and unheard, placing sorority at its core.
The play is performed entirely in Euskera, which the creators consider natural as it is a local story. They advocate for the importance of culture in Euskera, stating that the language is not a limitation but an added value. The piece is aimed at an adult audience, emphasizing that it is “broad, fun, fresh, and rhythmic,” while also containing a profound message. Its duration is approximately one hour.
The Basque audience has received the play “with great acceptance,” and the creators are pleased with the reception, especially during performances in Eibar and Zumaia. Looking ahead, the LOLAK Kolektiboa hopes to tour throughout Euskadi during autumn and winter, as new dates are already emerging for after the summer.
