Real Sociedad reached new heights two weeks ago in Seville by winning the Copa del Rey, an achievement that brought joy to thousands of fans, including many from Azpeitia. This triumph has brought to mind the club's rich history and its ties to the town.
Years have passed since Real Sociedad's first team last played at Garmendipe, but there were periods when the txuri-urdin team frequently visited the Azpeitia football ground. Especially under coach John Toshack, the Welshman greatly appreciated the Garmendipe pitch for training sessions or pre-season friendly matches.
Both before and after that era, Real Sociedad's youth teams, such as Sanse, also often passed through Garmendipe. A photograph from the May Zaharrak berri section depicts the Sanse team from the 1978-1979 season, Real's second team. In that team from 47 years ago were two Azpeitia natives who would later be promoted to the first team and achieve great victories with Real: Juan Antonio Larrañaga and Tomas Orbegozo.
In this image, both players are shown crouching in the bottom row: Larrañaga is in the center (without a mustache), and Orbegozo is the first from the right. The same photograph also features the two players who have played the most matches with Real Sociedad's men's first team to date: Bixio Gorriz (standing, second from the right), with 599 appearances; and Larrañaga himself, with 589.
Azpeitia Guka is encouraging citizens to share old and significant photographs they keep at home, to visually enrich the community's history.
