The Gipuzkoako Ur Kontsortzioa has launched the new 'The Value of Water' campaign, designed to highlight the dimension and complexity of the water service we use daily.

This campaign aims to give value to an essential public service that often goes unnoticed. While turning on a tap is a daily gesture, the process of water reaching homes is extensive: collection, treatment, storage, distribution, and after use, collection, purification, and return to the natural environment. Behind all this lies infrastructure, technology, sustainable investment, and the daily work of over 260 professionals.
One of the campaign's main objectives is to explain to citizens that the price of water cannot be understood solely by comparing the price per cubic meter in different locations. The characteristics of each territory influence the infrastructure required to provide the service and, consequently, the costs. Gipuzkoa presents a particularly complex reality, with numerous small municipalities, valleys, and scattered population centers.
Gipuzkoako Urak serves 88.76% of the territory, reaching approximately 345,000 inhabitants, and manages and maintains 7 reservoirs, 14 drinking water treatment plants, 259 storage tanks, and 10 treatment plants. "When we compare the price of water between different places, we must also compare the service behind it. The infrastructure and needs are not the same in all territories, and therefore, neither are the costs required to guarantee the entire water cycle. We want citizens to have this information and understand why they pay what they pay," explained Iñigo Elosegi.
In this context, the average price per cubic meter for the Consorcio de Aguas de Gipuzkoa is around 2.10 euros, compared to the Spanish average of 2.23 euros and the European average of approximately 3.90 euros, according to data from the Consortium.
The 'The Value of Water' campaign aims to explain all this reality to citizens in a simple, clear, and visual way. To achieve this, it will feature a dedicated landing page that will gather information about the water cycle, the necessary infrastructure, and the elements that influence the service's cost. Additionally, an audiovisual piece, 'The Journey of Water,' has been produced, illustrating the water's path from collection to purification and its return to nature.
As part of the campaign, infographics and educational content for social media have also been prepared to disseminate the campaign's main messages in an easy and visual manner. This campaign is designed for all 76 municipalities that make up the consortium, allowing each local council to adopt it and bring it closer to its residents.
