Tolosa has initiated a trapping campaign against the Asian hornet with the onset of summer, deploying nearly 90 traps to control the spread of this invasive insect, after 735 specimens were captured last year.

With the arrival of the summer season, the campaign for placing traps and controlling the population of the Asian hornet has begun in Tolosa. Approximately 90 traps have been installed at various points throughout the town. During the six-week duration of this campaign, specimens of Asian hornets or other species caught in the traps will be counted and registered weekly.
According to last year's data, 735 specimens of this invasive insect were collected in the municipality of Tolosa alone, a figure three times higher than the average for the 24 localities in Tolosaldea where these measures were implemented. In total, 5,560 hornets were captured in the region, averaging 232 per town. For this reason, along with Zizurkil and Anoeta, Tolosa will receive priority intervention to mitigate its high incidence.
Tolomendi, Belarmendi, and Balerdipeko Erleak are the promoters of this initiative, aiming to capture queen hornets to prevent them from generating new colonies during the summer months. This campaign is open to all of Tolosaldea, and each trap is reviewed weekly. All collected data is sent to the Provincial Council's Wild Animals and Plants Service to take appropriate measures and plan future control actions more effectively.
Citizen participation is essential for the success of this campaign, as the Asian hornet threatens native fauna and local biodiversity. Therefore, if the presence of this insect is detected, it is requested that the City Council or specialized services be informed to enable coordinated control among all involved agents.
