The Department of Health and Osakidetza have awarded the construction project for the new health center in Laguardia. A three-story building with a total planned area of 1,580 square meters will be erected in the La Barbacana zone. The space will be six times larger than the current one and will provide healthcare to the population of Laguardia and nearby towns.
The new center will feature 2 Family Medicine consultations, 1 for Interns/Residents (MIR), 3 for Nursing, 1 for Pediatrics, 1 for pediatric nursing, 1 lactation room, 1 for Dentistry, 1 for dental hygienist, 1 for Optometry, and 1 extraction room, along with several additional consultations and multipurpose rooms.
Osakidetza anticipates the center will be operational in 2029, following a 42-month execution period and a total investment of 4 million euros. The construction project will be drafted in the coming months, followed by the building works and final equipment installation.
The new building will be located on a plot ceded by the Laguardia City Council in the La Barbacana area, with a pedestrian access from the historic town center prioritized in its design. The project will be developed by the Bilbao-based firm JAAM arquitectos.
The new center will incorporate new services such as pediatrics and, as a regional health hub, will offer specialized care in dentistry, optometry, and physiotherapy to municipalities within its reference area. The current staff of 15 healthcare professionals is expected to increase.
The OSI Rioja Alavesa has been a recipient of infrastructure investment. In 2025, the new health center in Oion became operational after an investment of nearly 3 million euros. The Leza Hospital has also undergone renovations.
These actions are part of Osakidetza's 2025-2032 Infrastructure Program, with an investment of 1.6 billion euros for 74 projects, aiming to modernize technological infrastructure and restructure the healthcare network across Euskadi, boosting Primary Care.
