The Alavese town of Elciego was filled with a unique vibrancy yesterday, celebrating the XIII edition of the Flower and Garden Market. This essential event, marking the beginning of spring, showcased local produce and crafts to a wide audience.
Specifically, Elciego's Plaza Mayor hosted over twenty stalls primarily dedicated to garden-sourced materials. Until 3:00 PM, attendees could find flowers, plants, fruits, vegetables, cheeses, tomato seeds, walnuts, honey, and natural grape derivatives, among other items. Craft beer, costume jewelry, fardelejos, candied almonds, and liqueurs were also available.
Inevitably, the eyes of the dozens of people who visited the market, in addition to focusing on the goods at the stalls, were drawn to the tree branches. There, garden products such as carrots, leeks, and onions were displayed as decorations. The kiosk in the Plaza Mayor, for its part, was meticulously decorated with a beautiful selection of flowers.
Around 11:00 AM, the roar of chainsaws joined the feast of colors and scents with a figure carving exhibition. From 12:00 PM, attendees could sample fresh garden produce, while the youngest enjoyed themselves in the children's corner. This was not the only activity planned for children: at 1:00 PM, they had access to a floral workshop, and from 5:00 PM at the sports center, inflatable castles.
Another key event of the day was, without a doubt, the traditional parade led by the Comparsa de Jardineros del Carnaval Tradicional de Donostia, which, together with Gaiteros de Elciego & Friends, filled the streets with color, music, and dances starting at 1:00 PM. The event concluded, from 8:00 PM, with a concert by the Gasteiz-based band Sincromáticos, specializing in rock and pop covers – mainly from the eighties and nineties – and adaptations of national and international classics for parties.
Additionally, from vermouth hour, eight local hospitality establishments offered their clientele the “Flor y Huerta” pintxo, created for the occasion using the day's featured products. In organizing the event, the Town Council collaborated with the Cuadrilla and the Rioja Alavesa Wine Route, as well as with the Provincial Council of Álava, Euskadi Basque Country, and Etikoa Turismo Euskadi, not forgetting the youth association Lan Da Lan or Elciego's own dance group, among others.
