The award ceremony will take place on Saturday, the 16th, at 2 PM on the balcony of the old fishermen's guild in the old town, as part of the festive day dedicated to the anchovy.
“"We seek to make visible among citizens a very important work for society as a whole, which is often carried out silently."
The Consistory has stated that “we consider it necessary and especially valuable to highlight and disseminate that in Ondarroa we have a leading scientist who works to improve everyone's health and life”.
Currently, the award recipient is the Director of the Chair of Scientific Culture at EHU, an institution founded fifteen years ago to “promote and make scientific culture visible in the public sphere”. The biologist has extensive experience in both research and dissemination, having authored 28 scientific articles and four published books.
In 2006, he received the award for best young researcher, and in 2019, he won the Ernesto Viéitez award from the Royal Academy of Galicia for developing a therapy against liver metastasis. He has completed stays at foreign universities such as Copenhagen and Toronto, and has participated in the creation of two biotechnology companies. He combines his outreach work with his research against cancer and his teaching as a professor at the EHU Faculty of Medicine and Nursing.
