Portugalete will present its II Senior-Friendly Town Plan (2026-2029) on November 10th at 18:30 in Santa Clara. This initiative is part of the World Health Organization's (WHO) Age-Friendly Cities project, aiming to stimulate active and supportive participation of older people in all spheres and promote a more friendly and healthy environment for society as a whole.
Since October 2017, a Steering Group of forty-six senior citizens from Portugalete has been working on this project, which adheres to the WHO's Age-Friendly Cities initiative and is supported by the Basque Government through Euskadi Lagunkoia. The project has had the unanimous backing of the Portugalete City Council Corporation.
The first Action Plan concluded with a very positive overall assessment, achieving an 80% fulfillment rate. The Second Plan (2026-2029) includes 54 improvement proposals across the WHO's 8 areas, incorporating previously unexecuted proposals and contributions from citizen encounters, participatory budgets, and studies by organizations like Cáritas and Fundación Aspaldiko.
