According to local dance group officials, Santurtzi has a strong "quarry" of talent, as evidenced by the anniversaries being celebrated this weekend. The alarde txiki marks four decades, while the giants' troupe commemorates three. Both anniversaries underscore the importance of culture and its preservation.
The main event will take place on Sunday, bringing together around five hundred young dantzaris for an exhibition of the alarde txiki. This initiative, which “started against all odds in 1986,” originated with the idea of gathering the numerous dance groups from the Left Bank. Following the success of an initial general rehearsal, it was decided to continue annually, now reaching 40 years of trajectory.
At least 150 'txikis' from five groups in Santurtzi will form the alarde, joined by over three hundred from nine groups in Barakaldo, Sestao, and Portugalete. The youngsters, aged between 5 and 12 years, will showcase their talent on Sunday, starting at 12:00 PM in the central park. In case of rain, the event will be moved to Gernika Park.
Additionally, on Saturday, at 12:30 PM, a kalejira will be held to mark the 30th anniversary of the giants' troupe. These figures, essential in the town's festivities and cultural events, were recovered in 1996, after the two original figures, which “were stored in a municipal warehouse, degraded and disassembled,” were restored. After their restoration, they were brought back out for the El Carmen festivities.
“"In Santurtzi, there is a strong 'quarry' of talent, and proof of this are the anniversaries being commemorated this weekend."
Although currently displayed in the Maritime Museum, a new troupe was created in 2001 with four main characters: the sardine seller, the fisherman, the miner, and the mineral washer, each weighing 40 kilograms. Four years later, four slightly smaller figures, weighing 15 kilos, were added in homage to popular Santurtzi characters. Currently, there are also ten “mini giants” for children aged 5 to 7 years, with plans to hold a kalejira with them for the El Carmen festivities.
