The program for the Santakurtzetas festivities in Galdakao is gradually being revealed. This year, bertsolaris Nerea Ibarzabal, Unai Iturriaga, Alaia Martin, and Julio Soto will participate in the Bertsolaris Festival on September 13th in Kurtz square. The Galdakao native Arkaitz Estiballes will serve as the master of ceremonies.
Furthermore, the swimming pools at the Urreta sports center will reopen on September 1st, following summer maintenance work. Rooms for maintenance gymnastics, pilates, toning, and aquagym will also be available. The new cardio and fitness area is expected to be ready in October, offering increased space and equipment.
In terms of infrastructure, the Galdakao City Council and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia have awarded the contract to Team Ingenieria y Consultoria SL for 285,000 euros to draft the project for a new bridge and roundabout connecting the Bekea neighborhood with the N-634 road. The aim is to improve access, enhance road safety, and increase the hydraulic capacity of the Ibaizabal river. The project is anticipated to be completed by March 2027.
Additionally, work to widen the sidewalks and renovate the pavement on Zuberoa street began today, August 31st. The project will last three months. While parking spaces will be maintained, access to the street will be diverted from Juan Bautista Uriarte street. Pedestrian traffic will be ensured at all times.
Finally, work to restore access to the garages affected by the fire on August 7th near Zubiaurretaurren street will commence soon. After receiving the Ertzaintza's safety report, debris will be cleared and structural stabilization work will be carried out, allowing residents to access their garages again in the coming weeks.
During the Santakurtzetas festivities, from September 11th to 20th, cuadrilla (group) competitions will be a highlight. This year introduces a new Gastronomic Competition with five culinary challenges for participants aged 16 and over. The XXIII Cuadrilla Competition will feature 37 events, and the Youth Competition will have 9 events for those aged 12 to 16. Registration is open from September 2nd to 9th.
