The significant problem of accessibility and lack of parking at the Galdakao-Usansolo hospital complex is on its way to being resolved thanks to a project to expand the upper rear parking lot, which will gain 175 new parking spaces.
Representatives from the Department of Health and the general directorate of Osakidetza, along with the mayor of Usansolo, visited the affected land. During the three-way institutional meeting, the characteristics of this important intervention were detailed, with an estimated budget of 1.6 million euros. The aim is to guarantee the greatest possible availability of parking.
“"We aim to guarantee the greatest possible availability of parking."
The tender for both the project drafting and the material execution of the works is expected to be launched this year, with the building permit application processed in parallel. According to the timelines managed by the Department of Health and Osakidetza, machinery could begin work during the second four-month period of 2027, although the project will be executed in two phases. First, the current upper parking lot will be expanded along the vehicle access side, and then it will be extended towards the back, involving earthmoving tasks.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2028, and the ultimate goal is to alleviate traffic pressure in the hospital environment and improve access to the hospital, thereby contributing to providing more comfortable and effective patient care. The Usansolo city council, for its part, has expressed satisfaction with a project it deems very necessary to improve the hospital's facilities and services, as well as to decongest traffic in the municipality's urban area.
The expansion of the hospital parking is considered a strategic action because, after its completion, the construction of the new Outpatient Consultation building of the Galdakao Hospital will begin. This project involves an investment of 136 million euros and will transform and strengthen healthcare in the region. The new building will also feature five parking levels, totaling approximately 1,200 spaces. It is expected that the material execution of this project can be put out to tender in 2028, with work starting a year later and construction extending for three years, potentially completing by 2031.
