An old, disused electrical tower in central Erandio is set to be removed within two months, following local resident complaints and the structure's advanced state of corrosion, as decreed by the City Council.

Local pressure to remove an old, abandoned electrical tower in the heart of Erandio has yielded results. The installation, located on the grounds of the defunct Cables y Alambres Especiales (Caesa) factory – now converted into a temporary parking lot – must be dismantled within two months. The City Council has issued this decree, noting that the private company owning the land, Viuda de Sainz, has expressed its intention to remove it.
The process began with a citizen request last March, spearheaded by the Erandio Bizirik association. A technical inspection was prompted just two days later. A report by municipal services concluded that the medium-voltage structure, although not currently connected to the grid, shows an advanced state of corrosion. The document states that «this progressive deterioration could lead to a loss of stability if corrective measures are not taken within a reasonable timeframe».

Although the resolution from the Consistory specifies that «no imminent risk immediately compromising safety is perceived», it also acknowledges that «the evolution of the detected pathologies could affect the structural capacity and durability of the assembly if not properly intervened». Faced with this, and after a more exhaustive analysis, the property owner agreed to remove the tower «as part of the demolition process of the existing buildings and cleaning of the area».
The execution of the work requires prior action on the power lines. According to the decree, although no voltage flows through the wiring, it must be disconnected from the high-voltage tower located about 150 meters away, an intervention that Iberdrola's technical services are responsible for authorizing and carrying out. The Consistory clarifies that the operation will require the temporary evacuation of the parking area. «The intervention date will be communicated with sufficient notice to minimize inconvenience to citizens».
