The incidents occurred in the early hours of last Sunday. Several officers detected two youths near two burning containers in the El Regato (Gorostiza) area. After using the patrol vehicles' standard extinguishers and controlling the fire until the arrival of the fire services, they confirmed that the two individuals had fled the scene.
Minutes later, a new container fire occurred in another part of the town, in the Arteagabeitia neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers again observed one of the youths they had previously seen in Gorostiza.
The officers identified the youth and conducted a pat-down search, finding a lighter among his belongings. Furthermore, they observed that he had "dirty clothes, stained hands, and a strong smell of burning." The 18-year-old admitted to having been in the Gorostiza area with another minor, who was later intercepted by the officers.
Both were arrested and taken to police facilities. The minor was placed in the custody of his legal guardians after the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office was informed. The other detainee was brought before the court, and subsequently released.
The Councilor for Citizen Security, Ángel Madrazo, highlighted "the rapid action and coordination of the Local Police," and reiterated the commitment to "continue working to guarantee coexistence and act decisively against any act of vandalism."
He also pointed out that such uncivil behavior generates "significant economic damage and a serious risk to citizen safety." The municipal government's initial statement already emphasized that, according to technical estimates, replacing these elements, along with another container burned in the Ansio area (bringing the total to five incinerated), "will exceed 5,000 euros."
