Derio City Council has decided to freeze municipal taxes and fees for the coming year and will introduce a new tax on tourist stays starting January 1, 2027.

Derio City Council approved yesterday in a plenary session the freezing of municipal taxes and fees for 2027. These include the Real Estate Tax (IBI), the Tax on Motor Vehicle Traction, and the Economic Activities Tax (IAE), as well as various fees linked to municipal services, such as waste collection and sewage. Likewise, the fees for the Municipal Sports Center (DUK), the municipal 'txoko' (gastronomic society), and the dining service will remain unchanged.
Furthermore, existing fiscal benefits and exemptions will remain in force. These include exemptions applied to the vehicle tax for people with disabilities, discounts for electric and ECO vehicles, bonuses related to energy efficiency and sustainable mobility, and IBI bonuses for large families.
The decision to freeze taxes and fees has been made in a context of rising costs for providing and maintaining municipal services. Thus, the fiscal ordinances for 2027 will maintain the current tax rates and fees, without applying a general increase based on price evolution.
The plenary session also approved the municipal rates for the new tax on tourist stays. This tax, regulated by the Provincial Decree 3/2026 of Bizkaia, will come into effect on January 1, 2027. It will apply to individuals who spend the night in tourist accommodations, and the amount will vary according to the type and category of the accommodation.
In Derio, the rates will be as follows, per person and night: five-star hotels, 5.50 euros; four-star hotels, 4.50 euros; three-star hotels, 2.50 euros; two-star hotels, 1.75 euros; and one-star hotels, 1.25 euros. An apartment tourist tax of 3.50 euros will be applied to tourist apartments, and 6.50 euros for tourist use homes. Rural houses will have a rate of 1.25 euros, and rural tourism accommodations, 0.88 euros.
According to the regulations, a maximum of six consecutive nights per person will be taxed per accommodation. Additionally, the regulations foresee various exemptions (people with disabilities, minors, for health or force majeure reasons).
Derio currently has five hotels, making it the municipality with the most establishments in the Uribe region. In addition, there are six tourist-use homes and one rural house in the municipality, according to data from the Euskadi Registry of Tourist Companies and Activities (REATE) compiled by Nekatur.
In total, there are 576 tourist accommodation places in Derio. This represents a tourism intensity of 7.90%, considering the municipality's population (7,294 inhabitants).
