The Basque Government has presented the III Euskal Mundu Biltzarra – From Basque to the World, an international gathering that will convene in Bilbao on October 20, 21, and 22, 2027. Researchers, professionals, institutional representatives, social agents, and linguistic communities from around the globe will come together to reflect on the future of Basque and minority languages.
This initiative is part of JAUZIA GARA, a program promoted by the Basque Government to usher in a new era for Basque revitalization and advance its social use. During the presentation, Vice Lehendakari and Minister of Culture and Linguistic Policy, Ibone Bengoetxea, emphasized that “the future of Basque is not solely determined by knowledge; it is also shaped by its use, motivation, and its place in people's daily lives”.
The presentation took place in Bilbao and included the participation of the Vice Minister of Linguistic Policy, Aitor Aldasoro, and Jasone Cenoz, a member of the Congress's scientific committee. Several members of this committee, composed of renowned experts in fields such as sociolinguistics, education, culture, and linguistic policy, also attended the event.
The III Euskal Mundu Biltzarra revives the tradition of major congresses held in 1956 and 1987, adapting them to the challenges of the 21st century. The Congress aims to create an international space for meeting, reflection, and dialogue on the present and future of Basque and minority languages within a context shaped by globalization, digitalization, artificial intelligence, human mobility, and growing social and cultural diversity.
“"We want to build our future together with the world, learning from other linguistic communities and also sharing the Basque experience. That is the meaning of From Basque to the World."
The Congress will address the main challenges facing linguistic communities through four key areas of reflection: institutional leadership and global projection; social cohesion and well-being; culture, creation, and community; and technology and innovation.
“"Talking about the future of Basque also means talking about social cohesion, culture, innovation, and community."
For three days, Bilbao will become a hub for the exchange of knowledge and experiences among researchers, institutional leaders, professionals, social agents, and representatives of linguistic communities worldwide. The objective is to gain insights, identify common challenges, and explore new avenues for collaboration that contribute to strengthening linguistic diversity and language revitalization.
Furthermore, the Congress aims to make a social contribution that extends beyond the academic sphere. Alongside international knowledge and experiences, it will incorporate contributions from social, cultural, and educational agents to help identify the keys to continued strengthening of Basque in the coming decades.
Coinciding with the presentation of the III Euskal Mundu Biltzarra, the Basque Government has also launched the official Congress website, frombasquetotheworld.euskadi.eus, where all information related to the event can be found: content, committees, participants, keynote speakers, news, and calendar.
Additionally, the international call for papers and posters has been opened, targeting researchers, professionals, institutional representatives, social agents, and representatives of linguistic communities interested in sharing research, experiences, and initiatives related to Basque, minority languages, and linguistic diversity. The deadline is September 14, 2026.
