The Basauri City Council has announced that next Monday will mark the start of construction for five new elevators connecting the neighborhoods of El Kalero and Basozelai. The council has invested over five million euros in this project, and during the works, a «reference person» will be responsible for informing residents about the project's progress and addressing their inquiries, both in person and by phone.
Workers have already begun installing construction site cabins around the roundabout on Jacinto Benavente street. In response to citizen requests, the work will be divided into two phases, «with the aim of keeping the children's play area accessible» during the first phase, scheduled for this summer.
The investment made by the City Council will ensure accessibility in the Basozelai neighborhood, whose challenging topography has historically posed difficulties, particularly for the elderly population. Four of the elevators will connect the lower and upper sections of Karmelo Torre street, while the fifth will start from the rear of the church. All will share the same aesthetic and have a capacity for thirteen people.
Furthermore, pedestrian routes will be remodeled to create paths «with a gradient not exceeding 6%». The City Council has agreed with residents «not to close» the two access routes simultaneously, ensuring at least one remains open throughout the construction period.
