The Soloarte football field in Basauri will host a cadet football tournament over the next two weekends. The established Piru Gainza Tournament, organized by the fan club of the legendary Athletic player, is repeating last year's successful experience by offering a double championship: one for men and one for women.
The women's tournament will kick off the event on May 30 and 31. In commemoration, the Soloarte facilities hosted the presentation of the Basauri Women's Selection on Wednesday, an event attended by the mayor, Asier Iragorri, and the Sports Councilor, Jon Zugazagoitia.
Coach Sheila García has called up 20 players. The majority play for Basauriko Kimuak, including Ainhoa Arana, Nagore Burgoa, Nagore Aurrekoetxea, Izaro Martínez, Iraia Buján, Leire Peñas, María García, Maitane Basterra, Naia Cao, Teresa Ortiz, and Maider Soguero. From Indartsu, the called-up players are Carlota Corada, Garazi Guerrero, Nagore Aberasturi, Sara Talbi, Uxue Teno, and Yamilé Montserrat Espínola. The team also includes Yara Macho from Arratia, Nerea Prieto from Bilbao Artizarrak, and Ane García, who plays for Eibar.
Six teams will participate in the women's tournament, with matches on Saturday (morning and afternoon) and Sunday (morning only). The Basauri team will compete in Group A alongside teams from Elorrio and Ugao, while Group B will consist of Bizkerre, Etxebarri, and Bilbao Artizarrak. The event will conclude after Sunday's final and awards ceremony with a special tribute to the women's association Manuela Eguiguren.
One week later, the men's Piru Gainza Tournament will take place. After its absence in 2025, the Soloarte football field will once again host Athletic, who will be in Group A with the Basauri Selection and Deportivo Alavés. Group B will be formed by Real Sociedad, Rayo Vallecano, and the TSK Roces Football School (Asturias). Six top teams will compete in this championship, held on June 6 and 7, concluding with a tribute to the musical group Danbolin Txistulari Elkartea from Basauri.
