Amaia Agirre, the current mayor of Getxo, has announced her decision not to seek re-election in the upcoming municipal elections, concluding two terms and paving the way for a new era in the municipality.

Amaia Agirre, the mayor of Getxo, has communicated her decision not to run for re-election in next year's municipal elections. After serving two terms at the helm of the council, Agirre explained that “a chapter is closing, it is time to make way for new people.” In a statement, she detailed that this decision was “thought-out, shared with trusted individuals,” and made with the conviction to “open the door to new perspectives and new impulses that will continue to advance Getxo.”

"I feel that, at the end of this legislature, a stage at the head of the City Council also closes. It is a thoughtful decision, shared with trusted people, and made with the conviction that it is time to make way for new people, new perspectives and new impulses that will continue to advance Getxo."

Agirre, a PNV leader, was the first woman to hold the mayoral staff in the Getxo City Council, taking office in 2019, succeeding Imanol Landa. During her tenure, her public image has been eroded, particularly following the revelation by El Correo of the “Palacete case.” This case involves the illegal demolition of a protected building to construct luxury homes, for which three PNV councilors and three municipal officials are under investigation for malfeasance and crimes against heritage.
The mayor has affirmed that her commitment “remains intact” to lead the town during these final months. “I will continue working until the last day with the same dedication, responsibility, and enthusiasm with which I have undertaken each task from the beginning. My commitment to Getxo and our political project remains firm,” she concluded.
