Xabier Martin Martitegui, an attending physician in the Hematology Service, and Idoia Alonso Maruri, a physiotherapist from the Rehabilitation Service, have outlined the core elements of this initiative. The program seeks to embed physical exercise as a fundamental part of the patient care process, addressing the loss of physical capacity often associated with prolonged hospital stays and isolation.
The project supports patients across three phases: before, during, and after the transplant. Each patient undergoes a personalized functional assessment and receives an tailored exercise plan. During hospitalization, activities continue within isolation rooms, which are equipped with ergometers and, depending on clinical needs, dumbbells, resistance bands, and respiratory incentivizers.
To aid in physical activity, 147 explanatory videos have been created, accessible via QR codes or the eSano blog. These videos include exercises for strength, endurance, balance, coordination, and breathing, offered at various intensity levels.
The initiative involves coordinated participation from professionals in Hematology, Rehabilitation, Physiotherapy, Nursing, and Innovation. Its objective is to maintain functional capacity, reduce fatigue, and foster a more active recovery by systematically integrating physical exercise into the care pathway.
