The Getxo City Council has announced that the venue for the Aixerrota International Paella Contest will be smaller this year due to restrictions from the municipality's new General Urban Planning Plan (PGOU). This measure will affect a portion of the space traditionally used for the event, starting June 15th.
An area of 2.4 hectares in the Aixerrota fields will be cordoned off. This zone has been designated as an Environmental Improvement Area due to its high ecological value and is protected by European regulations. The aim is to ensure the conservation and regeneration of a habitat of special environmental interest, identified as Atlantic coastal dry heathland. The area will be physically demarcated and monitored by the Local Police to prevent occupation.
“"We must combine the enjoyment of such an important celebration for Getxo with respect for the environment. This is a particularly fragile space that requires care and conservation."
The Mayor of Getxo, Amaia Aguirre, emphasized the need to balance one of the municipality's most popular festivals with the protection of the natural environment. This decision was communicated to local residents and participating groups, with Getxo Kultura and the City Council mediating to enhance safety and promote environmentally respectful behavior.
Consequently, the parking area for individuals with certified reduced mobility will be relocated nearby and will be appropriately signposted. The City Council will also install informational signs detailing restricted areas and available services, including waste collection points, evacuation routes, fire safety equipment, a 'purple point' for addressing gender-based violence, health services, and water fountains.
The Council has confirmed that measures implemented in previous years to minimize the event's environmental impact and promote public awareness regarding safety, cleanliness, and sustainability will be maintained.
