The lyrical association is set to embark on one of the most symbolic periods in its history this autumn, with a special program designed to commemorate a double anniversary: 75 years of the opera season in Bilbao and 75 years since the entity's foundation in 1953. The tribute will span three years, from 2026 to 2028, and will bring together some of the most prominent names in the international opera scene.
“"During these three years, ABAO Bilbao Ópera will go all out to celebrate these anniversaries."
The first season, 2026-2027, will inaugurate the 75th season's celebration with a special preview program. The second, in 2027-2028, will coincide with the central moment of the anniversary, and the program will extend until the end of 2028 with new activities and special events. This will be the culmination of the commemorative triennium, concentrating various institutional acts to be announced soon.
ABAO has staged 1,176 performances, 134 operas by 44 composers, and 50 self-produced works, including the unique Tutto Verdi project. It has become one of Bilbao's leading cultural institutions and a benchmark in the opera world. The entity's officials have highlighted the merit of performing opera in Bilbao continuously for over three-quarters of a century, without having to cancel any performances.
For the 2026-2027 season, a “very special” program has been prepared. It will open with Verdi's La Traviata, and will also include Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia; Wagner's Die Walküre; Donizetti's Roberto Devereux; and Puccini's Manon Lescaut. Additionally, as a prelude to the main celebrations, the first edition of the ABAO Basque Musikaste Festival is scheduled for June, featuring international acclaimed performers with concerts in Gasteiz, Donostia, and Bilbao.
