The Abanto town council has unanimously approved an event to honor the five fatal victims of the bombings that occurred in Gallarta on June 16, 1937, during the final offensive against Bilbao in the Civil War.

The Abanto town council has given its unanimous approval to a motion to remember the five fatal victims of the Civil War bombings in Gallarta. These air attacks, part of the final offensive against Bilbao, also caused material damage and the displacement of the population from the municipality of Abanto in the days leading up to the entry of Franco's troops.
The occupation of Gallarta took place on June 24, 1937, in the final phase of the campaign over Bizkaia. The region, due to its economic and industrial importance, was one of the main targets of the offensive. To preserve historical memory, the municipal corporation unanimously approved a motion in Thursday's plenary session to honor the five bombing victims.
Specifically, a tribute event will be held on June 16, a date that will be incorporated for the first time into the municipality's institutional calendar of commemorations. This is one of the commitments that the local government team has undertaken as part of the recovery of historical memory.
