Tomorrow, October 29th, coinciding with the World No-Gambling Day, the Health and Consumption Area of the Bilbao City Council will establish an information point in Plaza de las Mujeres (Bailén street), from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This initiative aims to strengthen gambling addiction prevention and increase the visibility of support resources and groups assisting individuals with addictive processes and their families in Bilbao.
The activities are part of the Bilbao City Council's VI Local Addiction Plan, which seeks to reduce the prevalence and incidence of drug abuse and gambling, as well as the negative consequences associated with addictive behaviors. Within this plan, the Health and Consumption Area conducts health promotion activities for both the general population and specific groups.
The information point will feature the collaboration of the Alubiz Bilbao Association, composed of individuals who have experienced gambling addiction and their families, who share their experience altruistically. During the event, the informational brochure "Are you concerned about addictions? We walk with you towards a healthier life" will be distributed to raise awareness of the existing assistance resources and mutual aid groups in Bilbao.
It is estimated that 1.5% of the Basque population experiences some level of problem related to gambling, equivalent to approximately 28,000 people. Gambling addiction, particularly online gambling and digital betting, is a growing concern, especially among young people. 92.8% of the Basque population reports having gambled at least once in their lifetime, and 85.8% in the last 12 months.
